Centauros is an international English language journal of the history of science and its cultural aspects. It was started in 1950 and is the official journal of the European Society for the History of Science.
Its current issue (Volume 62, Issue 2) presents the dossier: Histories of epidemics in the time of COVID‐19, available in free access for six months.
It provides broad historical insight into COVID-19, showing that epidemics need to be studied within their broader cultural, political, scientific, and geographic contexts.
In the article How to have narrative‐flipping history in a pandemic: Views of/from Latin America, Historian Anne-Emanuelle Birn, a member of HCSM’s Scientific Editorial Board,
seeks to elucidate how and why Latin America is neither anecdotal nor peripheral to pandemic preoccupations.
The article first examines past epidemics in the light of imperialism. Next, it traces how the impetus for international health cooperation informed efforts elsewhere. Finally, it calls attention to the fundamental need for incorporating histories of and from Latin America.
