A <a href=\"https:\/\/noticias.portaldaindustria.com.br\/noticias\/infraestrutura\/investimentos-em-saneamento-caem-e-universalizacao-dos-servicos-de-agua-e-esgoto-ficara-para-a-decada-de-2060\/\">recent study<\/a> by The Brazilian National Confederation of Industry (CNI), based on data from the National Sanitation Information System (SNIS), showed that investments in the sanitation sector in Brazil decreased by 7.8% compared to the previous year, accounting for the lowest amount in 10 years.<\/p>\n<div class=\"_3x-2\" data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;H&quot;}\">\n<div id=\"attachment_9981\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scielo.br\/scielo.php?script=sci_issuetoc&amp;pid=0104-597020190001&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9981\" class=\"wp-image-9981\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/saneamento-POST.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"403\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Ag\u00eancia Brasil<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3x-2\" data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;H&quot;}\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_3x-2\" data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;H&quot;}\">\n<p>The\u00a0article\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scielo.br\/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S0104-59702019000100033&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso&amp;tlng=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Is sanitation essential to human health?<\/a>, published in the current issue of HCS-Manguinhos (vol.26\u00a0no.1 Jan.\/Mar.\u00a02019)\u00a0argues that sanitation remains virtually invisible in the Brazilian health sector agenda.<\/p>\n<p>This study by\u00a0<span class=\"author-name\">Paulo Rubens Guimar\u00e3es\u00a0Barrocas (Escola Nacional de Sa\u00fade P\u00fablica Sergio Arouca\/Fiocruz),\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"author-name\">Flavia Franchini de Mattos\u00a0Moraes (Escola de Medicina Souza Marques) and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"author-name\">Ana Cristina Augusto\u00a0Sousa (Escola Nacional de Sa\u00fade P\u00fablica Sergio Arouca\/Fiocruz)\u00a0<\/span>investigates the importance given to this topic by researchers from the public health field.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The relevance of the subject was mapped out in official research groups, Brazilian scientific journals, and public health graduate programs. The results showed that few of these programs addressed the topic of sanitation. As a consequence, according to the article, few public health research groups study and publish about sanitation in the journals assessed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Regarding the potential factors that can explain the apparent lack of interest on the part of\u00a0 health researchers and journals about sanitation, the article indicates the following:\u00a0 the\u00a0marginalization of\u00a0 sanitation services from the public health agenda after the 1960s, when its provision was transferred from health sector to the housing and urban development sector;\u00a0 the way environmental issues were incorporated into the field in the late 1970s, which eroded the perceived importance of sanitation amongst the environmental determinants of health;\u00a0 and\u00a0 sanitation may also have remained associated with the traditional public health approach, from which criticism gave rise to the field of public health.<\/p>\n<p>About sanitation in HCS-Manguinhos:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/the-sanitation-of-brazil-nation-state-and-public-health-1889-1930\/\">The Sanitation of Brazil: Nation, State, and Public Health, 1889-1930<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; The acclaimed study of Gilberto Hochman is available for the first time in English.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/basic-sanitation-in-brazil\/\">Basic sanitation in Brazil<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; The basic idea of this study is that public sanitation policies are strongly influenced by actors, interests, and institutions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/el-cine-y-la-difusion-sanitaria\/\">El cine y la difusi\u00f3n sanitaria<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Este libro aborda los instrumentos de difusi\u00f3n sanitaria para impulsar la educaci\u00f3n higi\u00e9nica y de esta forma evitar el contagio de enfermedades.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-meta clearfix\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Inadequate sanitation-related diseases affect vulnerable populations all over the world.
