In the early nineteenth century,\u00a0Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz, in the Gulf of Mexico,\u00a0was\u00a0one of the country’s most important port cities.<\/p>\n

While commercial links between Mexico and the United States through the port city of Veracruz brought significant economic and social advantages, public health concerns around yellow fever produced fascination and fear among US audiences.<\/p>\n

The article\u00a0Commerce, conflict, and contamination: yellow fever in early-independence Veracruz in the US imaginary, 1821-1848<\/a>\u00a0(HCSM\u00a0vol.25\u00a0no.3 July\/Sept.\u00a02018)\u00a0addresses the concern in\u00a0 US periodicals around yellow fever outbreaks.<\/p>\n

The author\u00a0Beau D.J. Gaitors,\u00a0Assistant Professor of History, Politics, and Social Justice at Winston-Salem State University addresses the complex linkages between commerce and contamination in Mexico\u2019s early decades of independence showing the constant presence of yellow fever in Veracruz in the US imaginary.<\/p>\n
