{"id":8605,"date":"2018-02-07T11:45:07","date_gmt":"2018-02-07T13:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/?p=8605"},"modified":"2018-03-07T22:11:03","modified_gmt":"2018-03-08T01:11:03","slug":"zika-and-aedes-aegypti-new-and-old-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/zika-and-aedes-aegypti-new-and-old-challenges\/","title":{"rendered":"Zika and Aedes aegypti: new and old challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\">February 2018<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Infection with the zika virus had a great impact not only on pregnant women and newborns, but also on public health, on popular ideas about Aedes aegypti and with respect to women\u2019s social rights.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8615\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1590\/s0104-59702017000500017 \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8615\" class=\"wp-image-8615\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/zika-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8615\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jaime Benchimol, Marcos Cueto, Ilana L\u00f6wy, Fl\u00e1via Bueno; Roberta Cerquera, Jos\u00e9 Moya and M\u00f3nica Garc\u00eda.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The current issue of HCSM (<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1590\/s0104-59702017000500017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vol.24\u00a0no.4 Oct.\/Dec.\u00a02017<\/a>)\u00a0\u00a0features a <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1590\/s0104-59702017000500017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debate<\/a> about the zika epidemic, which came to the fore when the disease raised a series of concerns related to its transmission and correlation with microcephaly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1590\/s0104-59702017000500017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This discussion<\/a> took place on the occasion of the seminar \u201c<em>Aedes aegypti<\/em>: past and new health emergencies\u201d held on December 2, 2016, by Casa de Oswaldo Cruz in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the Centre for Global Health Histories (University of York, UK).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After the seminar, Marcos Cueto (scientific editor) and Roberta Cerqueira (executive editor) talked to the speakers Jos\u00e9 Moya (PAHO\/WHO)\u00a0 and M\u00f3nica Garc\u00eda (Universidad del Rosario, Colombia) and the researchers Jaime Benchimol (COC\/Fiocruz) , Ilana L\u00f6wy (Cermes 3, Paris), and Fl\u00e1via Bueno (USP, S\u00e3o Paulo) about the history and challenges of\u00a0<em>Aedes aegypti<\/em>\u00a0and zika.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The subjects addressed\u00a0were related to the following questions: How can the zika and chikungunya epidemics be situated within the historical context of the fight against mosquitos and vectors?
