In the present issue of\u00a0Hist\u00f3ria, Ci\u00eancias, Sa\u00fade \u2013 Manguinhos (vol.24 no. 3 July-Sept. 2017<\/a>)<\/em>, we begin\u00a0a new section in the journal: historiographical reviews.<\/p>\n

Our aim is to provide a panoramic perspective of what has been achieved on selected themes and what needs more investigation.<\/p>\n

Nelson Sanjad,\u00a0a historian from the Museu Paraense Em\u00edlio Goeldi, in Bel\u00e9m, was commissioned to write on international exhibitions related to Latin America. We should mention that this article was possible thanks to the grant we received from the Wellcome Trust about a year ago.<\/p>\n

Topics include:\u00a0The botanist George Gardner’s\u00a0 impressions of slave culture in Brazil, 1810- 1850<\/a>;\u00a0The evolutionist debate in Spain <\/a>during the nineteenth century;\u00a0 the thalidomide tragedy<\/a> in Brazil, in the late 1950s; the\u00a0indicators of scientific productivity<\/a>; and the relationship between encyclopedic knowledge and the construction of science.<\/a><\/p>\n
