In the editor\u2019s note<\/a> \u00a0of the current\u00a0issue of HCS-Manguinhos (vol.24 no.2 Apr.\/Jun. 2017<\/a>), Andr\u00e9 Felipe C\u00e2ndido da Silva and Marcos Cueto reflect on\u00a0the hundredth anniversary of the death of Oswaldo Cruz, the renowned Brazilian scientist\u00a0and founder of the institutional complex that today bears his name.<\/p>\n

Oswaldo Cruz \u00a0designed a dynamic center for constant innovation – Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) -, capable of solving public health issues. He also hired young researchers to work in well-equipped working conditions and set up an advanced research and production infrastructure.<\/p>\n

“The irony that the centennial coincided with the threat of the resurgence of yellow fever did not go unnoticed by the media, as it was precisely the disease that Oswaldo Cruz managed to bring under control in 1907 in the city of Rio de Janeiro, where it had been an endemic menace”, the letter said.<\/p>\n

However, the editors point to some differences between the health campaign of Oswaldo Cruz and the current efforts against the yellow fever. According to them, the clarity of guidelines adopted at that time contrast with the dissonances that nowadays involve the media and national and international health agencies, such as the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n
