{"id":6946,"date":"2017-02-14T16:56:57","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T18:56:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/?p=6946"},"modified":"2017-04-09T13:23:07","modified_gmt":"2017-04-09T16:23:07","slug":"latin-eugenics-in-a-transnational-context","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/latin-eugenics-in-a-transnational-context\/","title":{"rendered":"Latin eugenics in a transnational context"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\">February 2017<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scielo.br\/scielo.php?script=sci_issuetoc&amp;pid=0104-597020160009&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6949\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-14-at-1.23.59-PM-718x1024.png\" width=\"323\" height=\"468\" \/><\/a>This thematic issue (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scielo.br\/scielo.php?script=sci_issuetoc&amp;pid=0104-597020160009&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso\" target=\"_blank\">vol.23\u00a0\u00a0supl.1<\/a>) revisits the concept of Latin eugenics in different historical circumstances and countries, such as Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Spain, Italy, Portugal and the United States.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Fl\u00e1via Florentino Varella explores the ideas of the\u00a0historian Robert Southey (1774 \u2013 \u00a01843) about miscegenation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The article by Luc Andr\u00e9 Berlivet investigates the rise to international prominence of the Italian \u00a0statistician and eugenicist Corrado Gini (1884- 1965).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Richard Mark Cleminson assesses critically the participation of Portuguese eugenicists in \u201cLatin eugenics\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In an analysis of the Brazilian case, Vanderlei Sebasti\u00e3o de Souza explores\u00a0the dialogue and exchanges between Brazilian eugenicists and their counterparts abroad in the early twentieth century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This special\u00a0issue also features an article on the racial ideas of the physician, journalist, and republican militant Domingos Guedes Cabral (1852-1883).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ana Carolina Vimieiro-Gomes sheds light on debates over national identity under the first Vargas government, when biotypology was finding space in the Brazilian medical and scientific fields.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In his paper, Ricardo Campos examines some of the main elements that shaped eugenic discourse and practices during the first decades of the Franco regime.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Diego Armus proposes a discussion about the history of eugenics in Argentina and Alexandra Minna Stern writes about forced sterilization practices in psychiatric institutions among what were then known as \u201cimbeciles&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Finally, Mercedes Garc\u00eda Ferrari and Diego Galeano explore the transnational circulation of methods for identifying people at police departments in Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil starting in the 1890s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This current issue of Hist\u00f3ria, Ci\u00eancias, Sa\u00fade \u2013 Manguinhos also features two interviews with experts\u00a0on this topic: Warwick Anderson and Jerry D\u00e1vila.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Read the full issue of HCS-Manguinhos &#8211;
