The paper\u00a0Psychosis and schizophrenia: effects of changes in psychiatric classifications on clinical and theoretical approaches to mental illness<\/a>,\u00a0by Fernando Ten\u00f3rio, professor at the Psychology Department of PUC- Rio, discusses especially the weakening of the \u201cpsychosis\u201d category.<\/p>\n Since the third revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) published in 1980 by the American Psychiatric Association, the main categories of mental illness classification \u2013 psychosis, neurosis and perversion \u2013 were replaced by a more empirical diagnosis based on observable symptoms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n As the current pathological classifications prioritize a physicalist approach, conditions previously associated with subjectivity are being medicalized.<\/p>\n In this video (in Portuguese), Ten\u00f3rio explains the impacts of this changes in the treatment of mental disorders.<\/p>\n https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dSAXh1guI4s&feature=youtu.be<\/p>\n See the dossier about mental health<\/a> in the latest issue of Manguinhos (Oct.\/Dec. 2016).<\/p>\n Ten\u00f3rio, Fernando.
