She said that when an article is well publicized, \u00a0it gets more views and this also reflects in an increase in submissions for the journal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Acting on social networks makes posible to reach an audience of different academic fields and a larger audience as well. If the article reaches more people, it is more likely to be read and quoted,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0pioneering and successful case of \u00a0science communication in the area of history is the blog <a href=\"http:\/\/cafehistoria.ning.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Caf\u00e9 Hist\u00f3ria<\/a>, edited by the journalist and historian Bruno Leal. Developed eight years ago in the Ning platform, which allows interaction with the users, the website had initially two aims: \u00a0use tools of digital media to promote the free exchange of ideas between professors, researchers and students and \u00a0disseminate historical researches among historians and a large audience (not experts).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5670\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/BrunoLeal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5670\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5670 \" alt=\"BrunoLeal\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/BrunoLeal.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5670\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bruno Leal, blog Caf\u00e9 Hist\u00f3ria.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>From 2008 to date, 60,000 people have registered on \u00a0Caf\u00e9 Hist\u00f3ria. In 2009, it launched a Twitter profile, which now has 24,000 followers, and in 2010 a Facebook page, which has amazing 340,000 followers.\u00a0In 2013, \u00a0they created a youtube channel, with 5,800 subscribers and 38 posted videos.<\/p>\n<p>The experience of the journal Hist\u00f3ria, Ci\u00eancias &#8211; Manguinhos with blogs and social networks, started in 2013. Roberta Cerqueira, executive editor of the journal,\u00a0explained that HCSM blogs in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/\" target=\"_blank\">Portuguese <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\">English\/Spanish<\/a> stores the posts published in its Facebook and Twitter profiles. She has also highlighted other advantages of \u00a0online tools:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;we have always been curious to know our audience&#8217;s profile. With the blog and social networks, we had the opportunity to know who reads our journal, their academic degree and the topics that interest them most,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Roberta also emphasized the potential of Twitter on science communication. She said that Twitter is often used by overseas researchers, but it is not that successful in Brazil. &#8220;We have reached a far more international audience on Twitter,&#8221; added.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ildeu Moreira, associated editor of HCS-Manguinhos, videos and gifs have a better sharing potential. Ildeu also perceives the public&#8217;s an interest for science characters, such as \u00a0Einstein and Darwin, which is observed \u00a0by the amount of shares of the posts on these topics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Social networking is an important tool to point out towards a citizen science,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5672\" style=\"width: 221px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/MatthewBrown.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5672\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5672 \" alt=\"MatthewBrown\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/MatthewBrown.jpg\" width=\"211\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5672\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mathew Brown, co-editor of Bulletin of Latin American Research.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With an opposing view, Mathew Brown, co-editor of <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/journal\/10.1111\/(ISSN)1470-9856\" target=\"_blank\">Bulletin of Latin American Research<\/a> is a bit suspicious of Facebook&#8217;s potential, but recognizes the role of Twitter as a tool to disseminate new articles. The editor believes that internet offers many possibilities beyond social networks, and showed the website of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/interactive.quipu-project.com\/#\/en\/quipu\/intro\">Quipu Project<\/a>, about the\u00a0family planning programme implemented by Fujimori in Peru \u00a0that resulted in the\u00a0the sterilisation\u00a0of 272,028 women and 22,004 men in only 4
