Co-written by Marcos Cueto and Steven Palmer the book Medicine and Public Health in Latin America was presented during the event.<\/p><\/div>\n

On 30 May \u2013 1 June 2015 the Canadian Society for the History of Medicine held its 11th<\/sup> Annual Conference at the University of Ottawa hosted and organized by the Hannah Chair in the History of Medicine at Queen\u2019s University. This is a traditional event where authors of books or other major projects that have come out in the preceding year get two minutes to tell their colleagues about them.<\/p>\n

Most of the papers presented during conference sessions are from work in progress. This year, the master of ceremonies duties fell to the engaging Casey Hurell, who had organized the list.\u00a0 Casey is a doctoral student at Queen\u2019s who delivered a timely conference paper on the prevention of war as primary care from the 1950s through the 1980s.<\/p>\n

The list included Steven Palmer\u2019s Canadian Treasury blog<\/a> project, as well as the book Medicine and Public Health in Latin America: A History<\/a><\/em>, co-written with Marcos Cueto, professor at Fiocruz, Brazil\u2019s history of medicine, science and technology research institute.<\/p>\n

Other highlights at the event were:<\/p>\n

\u201cVideo Interviews with Medical Researchers in Canada\u201d<\/a>, a new website supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, a powerful online tool compiled by Aubie Angel and Michael Bliss of the University of Toronto.<\/p>\n

Parmi Les Fous: Une Histoire Sociale de la Psychiatrie au 20e Siecle<\/em> by Benoit Majerus.<\/p>\n

D\u00e9sinstitutionalisation psychiatrique en Acadie, en Ontario francophone et au Qu\u00e9bec<\/em> [Psychiatric De-institutionalization in Acadia, francophone Ontario and Quebec] (Presses de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec) edited by Marie-Claude Thifault and Henri Dorvil.<\/p>\n

A new Heritage Minute on the history of Canadian nursing in the First World War was introduced by Michelle Filice, a doctoral candidate at Wilfred Laurier University, who worked on the project.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Reinarz spoke on two new books: Complaints, Controversies and Grievances in Medicine<\/em>, a collection co-edited with Rebecca Wynter, and his solo-authored, long-time labour of love, Past Scents: Historical Perspectives on Smell<\/em>, published by the University of Illinois Press.<\/p>\n

A rare mother-daughter collaboration in the history of medicine. Vesna Bla\u017eina proudly presented her new McGill-Queen\u2019s University Press book, Expelling the Plague: The Health Office and the Implementation of Quarantine in Dubrovnik, 1377-1533<\/em>, co-written with her mum, Zlata Bla\u017eina Tomi\u0107.<\/p>\n

Susan Lamb of McGill University introduced her book Pathologist of the Mind: Adolf Meyer and the Origins of American Psychiatry<\/em> published by Johns Hopkins University Press.<\/p>\n

Alexandre Klein of the Universit\u00e9 d\u2019Ottawa, announced his new work, Histoire de la sant\u00e9 (18e-20e si\u00e8cles): Nouvelles approches francophones<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Juanita De Barros of McMaster University presented her new book, Reproducing the British Caribbean: Sex, Gender, and Population Politics after Slavery<\/em>, fresh out with the University of North Carolina Press.<\/p>\n

Sandra Menenteau spoke on her book, L\u2019autopsie judiciaire. Histoire d\u2019une pratique ordinaire au XIXe si\u00e8cle<\/em> [The Judicial Autopsy. History of a common 19th-century practice.] (Presses Universitaires de Rennes).<\/p>\n

Christine Hallett\u2019s Veiled Warriors: Allied Nurses of the First World War<\/em> was presented by Carol Helmstader, who has an essay in Hallett\u2019s other new book, One Hundred Years of Nursing Practices, 1854-1953<\/em> (Manchester University Press).<\/p>\n

Finally, Erika Dyck of the University of Saskatchewan, a Canada Research Chair and historian of medical psychedelics and eugenics spoke on a special issue of the Canadian Journal of History<\/em> (vol. 49, no. 3). She was then joined by Kenton Kroker of York University\u2019s Science and Technology Studies, who are the new editors of the Canadian Bulletin of Medical History<\/em>.
