Bedford College \u2013 now known as Royal Holloway, University of London \u2013 was founded in 1849 and attracted notable alumni, including Sarah Parker Remond, the first black woman to lecture across Britain on slavery, and novelist George Eliot. The college\u2019s labs were used by students to dissect crabs, explore botany \u2013 and find out why weak hearts fail.
