By the end of the 19th century, Africans and peoples of African descent\u2014except Ethiopians, Haitians, and Liberians\u2014were living under some form of European colonial domination.\u00a0But over the course of the last 100 years black people around the world launched epic struggles for freedom, civil rights, and independence.\u00a0As a result European colonial regimes have collapsed, independent African and Caribbean nations have emerged, racial segregation in the U.S. has been overthrown, and apartheid in South Africa is a thing of the past.<\/p>\n

The online exhibition Africana Age,<\/a> created by the\u00a0Schomburg-Mellon Humanities Summer Institute,\u00a0features photographs, prints, manuscripts, and periodicals to retraces this turbulent history of challenges, tragedies, and triumphs.<\/p>\n

Amilcar Cabral (1924\u20131973), an agronomist and Marxist nationalist, led the fight against Portuguese colonial rule in Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde.<\/p><\/div>\n

The vast archive of images is divided into historical topics, such a colonization of Africa, Pan-Africanism, Resistence to Colonial Rule, \u00a0Civil Rights Movement and Decolonization of Africa.<\/p>\n
