Agência Brasil

Brazil’s Ministry of Health announced yesterday (Oct 13) that the second screening of a patient suspected of being infected with Ebola came out negative. Souleymane Bah, 47, came from Guinea to Brazil through several countries. The Evandro Chagas Institute, in Belém, Pará, has confirmed that he has not contracted the virus.

According to Health Minister Arthur Chioro, the criteria for the patient’s dismissal will be analyzed by the medical staff at the National Infectology Institute Evandro Chagas, in Rio de Janeiro, where Bah has been flown. The people who came into contact with him and were kept under observation have already been released . The minister said that the measures for the prevention of Ebola have been kept unchanged.

Bah arrived in Brazil on September 19. He had a fever on October 8, and sought a public health station in Paraná the following day. The health minister was subsequently informed, and the patient was relocated to Rio de Janeiro, where he underwent the first examination. The material collected was sent to the institute’s laboratory in Belém, famous for the analysis of infectious diseases. The second collection was carried out 48 hours after the first. These are the procedures set forth by the World Health Organization for confirming the diagnosis of the disease.

Guinea is one of the Western African countries hit by the Ebola outbreak. Since the beginning of the year, in the country, 1,350 people have been reported as having been infected, and 778 as having died from hemorrhagic fever.

Aline Leal reports from Agência Brasil Brazil’s Ministry of Health announced yesterday (Oct 13) that the second screening of a patient suspected of being infected with Ebola came out negative.
