The BMJ (<\/span>British Medical Journal<\/span><\/a>) is one of the most prestigious international peer-reviewed medical journals and strongly supports the decolonization of global health and medicine. Members of The BMJ’s Council for Latin America, Deisy Ventura, professor of ethics at the School of Public Health at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo, and Miguel O’Ryan, dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Chile, wrote the first editorial of the council:\u00a0<\/span>Strengthening Latin America’s presence in global health<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The text indicates Latin America’s essential contributions to global health, including efforts in social medicine and the licensing of an AIDS drug in Brazil in 2007. It also addresses Latin America’s Colonial legacy, the region’s health challenges, and their implications for academic medicine.<\/span>
