In Assun\u00e7\u00e3o, M. R. (2014). <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1590\/S0104-59702014005000002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Capoeira circle or sports academy? The emergence of modern styles of capoeira and their global context<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>From a historical perspective, we have selected articles that address racial issues in Brazil and the sad slave past that had profound and lasting consequences for our society. Articles also include topics related to black culture and resistance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/a-morphology-of-quilombos-in-the-americas-sixteenth-nineteenth-centuries\/\">A morphology of \u2018quilombos\u2019 in the Americas, sixteenth-nineteenth centuries<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0 The paper written by\u00a0Manolo Florentino (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro) and\u00a0M\u00e1rcia Amantino\u00a0(Universidade Salgado de Oliveira) presents a study on \u201cquilombos\u201d in slave societies in the Americas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/tetanus-among-slaves-and-freeborn-in-brazil\/\">Tetanus among slaves and freeborn in Brazil<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Ian Read, from Soka University, talks about tetanus in 19th century Brazil. According to him, the story about health and medicine is needed to understand the transition from empire to the republic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scielo.br\/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S0104-59702012000500005&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso&amp;tlng=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Slave mortality during the cholera epidemic in Rio de Janeiro (1855-1856): a preliminary analysis<\/a>.
