{"id":14470,"date":"2022-10-05T18:21:31","date_gmt":"2022-10-05T21:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/?p=14470"},"modified":"2023-10-06T10:58:59","modified_gmt":"2023-10-06T13:58:59","slug":"breast-cancer-in-brazil-1990-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/breast-cancer-in-brazil-1990-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Breast cancer in Brazil, 1990-2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\">October 2023<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scielo.br\/j\/hcsm\/a\/N5cX4rsTGCBDLKS9D86ctZC\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-14471\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/cancer-mama-nota-novembro.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a>The paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scielo.br\/j\/hcsm\/a\/N5cX4rsTGCBDLKS9D86ctZC\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beyond biomedical classifications: breast cancer experience in Brazil, 1990-2015<\/a>\u00a0(<span class=\"_editionMeta\">HCSM<span class=\"_separator\">\u00a0<\/span>Jul-Sep\u00a02022)<\/span><span class=\"_separator\">\u00a0<\/span>analyses illness experiences of breast cancer in women undergoing treatment at the Hospital of Cancer III of the National Institute of Cancer (INCA), in Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Researchers Carlos Barradas (University of Coimbra), Luiz Teixeira and Luiz Alves Ara\u00fajo Neto (Fiocruz) investigated how women undergoing treatment for breast cancer understand and give meaning to their illness experience.<\/p>\n<div>Based on qualitative research with ethnographic inspiration, the researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with women undergoing breast cancer treatment.\u00a0They\u00a0observed that the experiences of women with breast cancer were built from the interaction between aspects of family life, different cultural meanings of disease and femininity, and knowledge and practices of biomedicine.<\/div>\n<p>Illness experience is a phenomenon at the same time individual and collective, lived within the family sphere and in other circles, confronting different aspects that configure the subjectivity and personal trajectory of the sick person.<\/p>\n<p>Breast cancer is a disease that, besides the violence of its biological effects, brings with it a strong symbolic and emotional load, related to both the suffering that it produces and the possible transformations on the body and on sociability.
