{"id":13755,"date":"2022-01-23T13:34:54","date_gmt":"2022-01-23T16:34:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/?p=13755"},"modified":"2022-02-07T11:38:17","modified_gmt":"2022-02-07T14:38:17","slug":"the-stigma-of-an-education-abroad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/the-stigma-of-an-education-abroad\/","title":{"rendered":"The stigma of an education abroad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Jan 23, 2022<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13756\" style=\"width: 388px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scielo.br\/j\/hcsm\/a\/QNZrFYLzwVLJhVXw9H9y3Cx\/?lang=pt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13756\" class=\"wp-image-13756\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Angola.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"378\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13756\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This work by Jos\u00e9 Pinto de Azeredo, published in 1799 is considered the first work on diseases in Angola<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"article-title\">Medical training and careers in Portugal between 1764 and 1810 is the subject of an article recently published in HCS-Manguinhos (vol. 28 n. 4,<span class=\"_separator\">\u00a0<\/span>Oct-Dec\u00a02021).<a id=\"shorten\" class=\"short-link\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1590\/S0104-59702021000400002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article-title\">The article\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scielo.br\/j\/hcsm\/a\/QNZrFYLzwVLJhVXw9H9y3Cx\/?lang=en#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medical training and careers in Portugal at the time of Jos\u00e9 Pinto de Azeredo (1764-1810)<\/a>\u00a0analyzes\u00a0an individual trajectory in interaction with other individuals and institutions, and the contradictions of the historical context that constrained the life of Jos\u00e9 Pinto de Azeredo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-title\">This article by Laurinda Abreu, Professor at the Department of History at Universidade de \u00c9vora, contributes to knowledge on medical training and careers at a time of change driven by Enlightenment ideas, but also a time of conflict between age-old structures and new legal frameworks.<\/p>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Pinto de Azeredo was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1764 and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh between 1786 and 1788.\u00a0In April 1789, shortly after earning recognition for his medical training, Jos\u00e9 Pinto de Azeredo was appointed \u201cchief physician&#8221; in Angola\u00a0 and was also a professor\u00a0at the \u201cschool of medicine\u201d at the Miseric\u00f3rdia hospital of Luanda, which mostly treated soldiers.
