Foto: Erik Barros Pinto \/ Projeto Radis\/ENSP\/Fiocruz.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scielo.br\/j\/hcsm\/a\/BSSprKy6ryYdXrGxyfpRxPC\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Readings about developmentalist health and interpretations for the Brazilian health reform and public health<\/a> <a class=\"copyLink\" data-clipboard-target=\"#citationCut\">(HCSM Jan-Mar 2021) is one of the articles on Brazilian history translated into English.\u00a0 It analyzes the discourse of two sanitary doctors from the developmentalist period \u2013 M\u00e1rio Magalh\u00e3es da Silveira and Carlos Gentile de Mello \u2013 to identify the precursors of the Brazilian health reform.<\/a><a id=\"shorten\" class=\"short-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scielo.br\/j\/hcsm\/a\/BSSprKy6ryYdXrGxyfpRxPC\/?lang=en#\"><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>On 24 May 2017, the UN General Assembly recognized\u00a0the role of language professionals in connecting nations and fostering peace and declared 3<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/international-translation-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">0 September as International Translation Day<\/a>. September\u00a0 30\u00a0 celebrates the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator, who is considered the patron saint of translators.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Hist\u00f3ria Ciencias Sa\u00fade &#8211; Manguinhos has seriously embraced the goal of internationalization. Due to this, we also had to increase the number of articles translated mainly into English.\u00a0To celebrate the International Translation Day, we made a selection of articles about\u00a0any aspect of the history of Brazil translated from Portuguese into English<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/geology-and-medicine-in-brazil\/\">Geology and medicine in Brazil<\/a>\u00a0Oscar Nerval de Gouv\u00eaa was a scientist and teacher in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, whose work spanned engineering, medicine, the social sciences, and law. This paper discusses a manuscript entitled \u201cTable of mineral classification,\u201d which he appended to his dissertation presented to the Faculty of Medicine in 1889.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/developmentalist-health-and-the-the-brazilian-health-reform\/\">Developmentalist health and the the Brazilian health reform<\/a>\u00a0This article (HCSM Jan-Mar 2021) analyzes the discourse of two sanitary doctors from the developmentalist period \u2013 M\u00e1rio Magalh\u00e3es da Silveira and Carlos Gentile de Mello \u2013 to identify the precursors of the Brazilian health reform.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/psychoanalysis-during-the-brazilian-military-dictatorship\/\">Psychoanalysis during the Brazilian military dictatorship<\/a>\u00a0The paper concludes that psychoanalysis over this period was dominated by the discourse of neutrality.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/control-of-cervical-cancer-in-brazil-the-belo-horizonte-hospital-of-gynecology\/\">Control of cervical cancer in Brazil: the Belo Horizonte Hospital of Gynecology<\/a>\u00a0 The hospital was a pioneer in introducing colposcopy in the state of Minas Gerais and establishing a structure specifically for care and diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/a-review-of-environmental-historiography-on-brazil\/\">A review of environmental historiography on Brazil<\/a>\u00a0This overview of books on Brazilian environmental history includes topics such as forests, agriculture, biodiversity, urban dynamics and environmentalism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/brazil-in-the-counterflow-of-history\/\">Brazil in the counterflow of history<\/a>\u00a0This article, published in preprint at Scielo Library, analyzes how Brazilian foreign policy is responding to the main domestic and international challenges related to fighting the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"meta-info\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/fiocruz-as-an-actor-in-brazilian-foreign-relations\/\">Fiocruz as an actor in Brazilian foreign relations<\/a>\u00a0This article presents some international projects on health cooperation held by Fiocruz in the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/the-limits-of-healthcare-assistance-in-19th-century-brazil\/\">The limits of healthcare assistance in 19th century Brazil<\/a>\u00a0In order to understand healthcare assistance in nineteenth century Brazil, Rog\u00e9rio Siqueira and Maria Renilda Barreto examine the Zona da Mata region in the state of Minas Gerais.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/social-status-of-women-involved-in-brazils-health-policy-on-leprosy\/\">Women involved in Brazil\u2019s health policy on leprosy<\/a>\u00a0Francieli Lunelli Santos and Jos\u00e9 Augusto Leandro examine the family profiles of women holding key decision-making positions in health policy concerning leprosy from the mid-1920s to the late 1940s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/chagas-disease-and-tropical-medicine-in-brazil-1908-1909\/\">Chagas disease and tropical medicine in Brazil, 1908-1909<\/a>\u00a0The disease was discovered in 1909 by the Brazilian sanitary physician Carlos Chagas at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/railroads-and-tropical-medicine-in-brazil\/\">Railroads and tropical medicine in Brazil<\/a>\u00a0This paper by Jaime Benchimol and Andr\u00e9 Felipe C\u00e2ndido da Silva, our former and current science editors, shows how railways supported the development of tropical medicine in the First Republic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/zefinha-the-longest-confined-woman-in-brazil\/\">Zefinha, the longest confined woman in Brazil<\/a>\u00a0Debora Diniz and Luciana Brito (Universidade de Bras\u00edlia) analyze dossier, judicial proceedings, interviews and photographs about the woman who spent more time within the walls of the forensic hospital than outside them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/medicine-in-the-context-of-portugal-africa-and-brazil\/\">Medicine in the context of Portugal, Africa and Brazil<\/a>\u00a0This dossier examines different aspects of medicine in the Portuguese colonial period, such as the slave trade and the circulation of diseases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"meta-info\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/two-views-on-malaria\/\">Two views on malaria<\/a>\u00a0This research compares two views of malaria in the Amazon that coexisted side by side during the First Brazilian Republic (1889-1930).
