Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/revistapesquisa.fapesp.br\/um-historiador-entre-dois-mundos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Revista Pesquisa Fapesp<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The new edition of\u00a0Hist\u00f3ria, Ci\u00eancias, Sa\u00fade \u2013 Manguinhos (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1590\/S0104-59702021000300001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">n3, Jul-Sept 2021<\/a>) honors the historian of science Shozo Motoyama,\u00a0who died on January 26, 2021,\u00a0at the age of 81. He was full professor of History of Science at the Department of History of the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Humanities of the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (FFLCH-USP)<\/p>\n<p>Shozo Motoyama (1940-2021) was a forceful defender of the history of science in Brazil. The son of Japanese immigrants, Motoyama started his undergraduate degree in physics in 1964 at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (USP), during a difficult period, including a military coup, and heated debates. He defended his dissertation in the Postgraduate Program in Social History in 1971. A post-doctoral thesis at USP and post-doctorate research in cosmic ray laboratories in Japan \u2013 the University of Tokyo and Waseda University \u2013 completed his interdisciplinary training.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The entirety of these experiences allow us to recognize, in the writings of Professor Shozo Motoyama, his various books and articles, the link between the socio-political concepts related to overcoming Brazilian underdevelopment, especially in the context of the 1960s and 1970s, in which Brazil sought, through economic planning, international cooperation and incentives for science and technology, to increase the number of jobs, expand the country\u2019s production capacity and, thus, improve the quality of life in Brazil&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Read the full <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1590\/S0104-59702021000300001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">guest editor&#8217;s note<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0M\u00e1rcia Regina Barros da Silva<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>Professor of History\u00a0 at\u00a0FFLCH-USP.<\/p>\n<p>Silva, M\u00e1rcia Regina Barros da. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1590\/S0104-59702021000300001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shozo Motoyama (1940-2021), several traditions<\/a>.
