In 1906,\u00a0Doctor Em\u00edlio Ribas reorganized the Sanitation Service of S\u00e3o Paulo. A campaign to combat <\/span>trachoma –<\/span>\u00a0an ophthalmic disease related to poverty with high incidence in rural areas – was implemented as part of the project.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Prophylaxis and treatment of diseases in western S\u00e3o Paulo state: the Sanitation Service and trachoma in the early twentieth century<\/a>, Soraya Lodola, PhD in Science and Technology Policy at Unicamp and Cristina Campos Profesor in the\u00a0Graduate Program in Science and Technology Policy at\u00a0the same university analyze this campaign, which provided care for the sick living on rural properties<\/p>\n

The article\u00a0 concludes that Ribas, by creating an organization that integrated the efforts of the sanitary districts and the Trachoma Commission medical teams, sought to form a complex apparatus to combat the diseases present in both urban areas and the countryside.<\/p>\n
