Fuente: US National Library of Medicine.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Seven months ago, the Pan-American Health Organization confirmed that Latin America and the Caribbean had\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/05\/26\/americas\/latin-america-coronavirus-toll-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-extlink=\"\">become the global epicenter for COVID-19<\/a>. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/sites\/reliefweb.int\/files\/resources\/2021-01-18%20Weekly%20Situation%20Update%2011-17%20January%202021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PAHO data<\/a>, on January 17th the region had\u00a017,421,914 cases, with\u00a0550,775 deaths, an increase, respectively, of\u00a0 5.1%\u00a0 and 3.7% from January 10th.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">However, immunization has already begun in countries such as Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, Argentina and Brazil.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In Brazil, two vaccines were recently approved by the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa). One of them started to be negotiated\u00a0in late June 2020, when the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) bought the vaccine developed by the University of Oxford with AstraZeneca, a giant pharmaceutical company in the UK, as part of a technology transfer agreement in order to produce it locally. Source: Brasiliana Fotogr\u00e1fica<\/p><\/div><span class=\"JLqJ4b ChMk0b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"pt\" data-phrase-index=\"0\">In 1967 the World Health Organization (WHO)\u00a0launched the\u00a0global smallpox eradication programme and in 1980 proclaimed the eradication of this disease.<\/span> <span class=\"JLqJ4b ChMk0b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"pt\" data-phrase-index=\"1\">The\u00a0article\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1590\/S0104-59702015000200004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Control, containment and health education in the smallpox-vaccination campaigns in Mexico in the 1940s<\/a>, by\u00a0Claudia Agostoni, analyzes why a uniform and coordinated vaccination method was adopted to counter the outbreaks of this endemic disease, especially in central Mexico and the reasons why smallpox vaccination was considered critical to establish a culture of prevention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1590\/S0104-59702010000300012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1590\/S0104-59702010000300012&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1611050841296000&amp;usg=AFQjCNElFdFlESnRgsHF8gctnnsfwcTohA\">Smallpox eradication, laboratory visits, and a touch of tourism: travel notes of a Canadian scientist in Brazil<\/a>, Steven Palmer, Gilberto Hochman, and Danieli Arbex present the travel notes diary of Canadian scientist Robert J. Wilson when he visited Brazil in April 1967 during the Smallpox Eradication Programme run by the WHO.\u00a0Wilson\u2019s report makes it possible to reflect on the smallpox eradication campaign in Brazil and on the Canada-Brazil cooperation to improve the quality of the smallpox vaccine.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ccvoYb\">\n<div class=\"AxqVh\">\n<div class=\"OPPzxe\">\n<div class=\"dePhmb\">\n<div class=\"eyKpYb\" data-language=\"en\" data-original-language=\"pt\" data-result-index=\"0\">\n<div class=\"J0lOec\"><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b ChMk0b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"pt\" data-phrase-index=\"0\">In the first half of 1951, the last case of smallpox was registered in Mexico. Starr Professor at New York University School of Medicine about her work to develop\u00a0 an antimalarial vaccine. In her testimony, she traces some of the stages through which her research has passed.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/the-race-for-a-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">disputed race for the vaccine against the new coronavirus <\/a>is the topic explored by Marcos Cueto, scientific editor of HCS-Manguinhos, in the Editor\u2019s note of HCSM recent\u00a0issue.
