Thirty\u00a0years ago, on September 19, 1990, Law 8,080 was enacted,\u00a0creating the Unified Health System (SUS). Inspired in the British National Health Service (NHS), SUS\u00a0is completely free of charge for patients and based on the principle that Health is a right of all and an obligation of the State.<\/p>\n

To celebrate this remarkable moment, we highlight some articles and texts already published in our journal or blog\u00a0about SUS, which\u00a0is playing a decisive role in this pandemic context.<\/p>\n

Health reform and the creation of the Sistema \u00danico de Sa\u00fade: notes on contexts and authors<\/a><\/strong>, by Historians Carlos Henrique Assun\u00e7\u00e3o\u00a0Paiva and Luiz Antonio\u00a0Teixeira, from\u00a0Casa de Oswaldo Cruz<\/em>\/FIOCRUZ,\u00a0explains how within the context of the return to democracy, the new constitution enacted in 1988 transformed health into an individual right and initiated the process of creating a public, universal and decentralized health system, profoundly altering the organization of public health in Brazil. The essay discusses\u00a0the main institutional, political and social aspects of this health reform, along with the changes, the continuities and the major initiatives, based on the literature published by the most widely read authors in this field of study.<\/p>\n

The right to health<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0–\u00a0\u00a0In 2016 we interviewed two\u00a0experts on\u00a0this\u00a0subject, Jos\u00e9 Paranagu\u00e1 and Carlos Henrique Paiva.<\/p>\n

\u201cHealth is everyone\u2019s right<\/a><\/strong>\u201d – Jos\u00e9 Paranagu\u00e1 is a reference in Brazil and Latin America in terms of community health, international health and bioethics. He\u00a0is a doctor and has a PhD in health sciences. \u00a0Among his many awards, he received the Oswaldo Cruz Medal of Merit in 2009 from the Brazilian Ministry of Health.<\/p>\n

For an universal health system<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0– Carlos Henrique \u00a0Paiva is Assistant Professor of the Graduate Program in The History of Science and Health at the Casa deOswaldo Cruz. Carlos Henrique Paiva has published several articles and books about the history of public health in Brazil, health reform and the Brazilian National Health Service (SUS).<\/p>\n

Political challenges facing the consolidation of the Sistema \u00danico de Sa\u00fade: a historical approach<\/a><\/strong>, by Paulo Henrique de Almeida Rodrigues Professor, Instituto de Medicina Social\/ Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro\u00a0investigates the circumstances in which Brazil\u2019s sanitation reform was conceived and the Sistema \u00danico de Sa\u00fade (SUS) was constructed.<\/p>\n
