The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation was created on May 25, 1900. It was first called\u00a0<\/span>Serum Therapeutic Institute<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and was\u00a0founded to produce serums and vaccines. After Oswaldo Cruz was designated director in 1902, the institution expanded its activities and became involved in research and experimental medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n

To\u00a0celebrate the 124 years of Fiocruz, we selected\u00a0a broad range of articles – published in English and Spanish – discussing different aspects, areas, and activities held by the institution. Topics include the following:\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0establishment of the Federal Serum\u00a0Therapy Institute; The legacy of Oswaldo Cruz – the renowned Brazilian scientist\u00a0and founder of the institutional complex that today bears his name; The work of Carlos Chagas, a young researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, who discovered the Chagas disease; The creation of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS); The work done by Fiocruz, in\u00a0health education and training;\u00a0Fiocruz’s international role in health diplomacy and cooperation;\u00a0\u00a0The centenary of the Fernandes Figueira Institute, the Fiocruz unit devoted to children’s and mother health.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
