{"id":10918,"date":"2019-12-30T16:00:32","date_gmt":"2019-12-30T18:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/?p=10918"},"modified":"2020-01-07T16:02:22","modified_gmt":"2020-01-07T18:02:22","slug":"franco-basaglia-biography-of-a-revolutionary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/franco-basaglia-biography-of-a-revolutionary\/","title":{"rendered":"Franco Basaglia: biography of a revolutionary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\">December 2019<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10919\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10919\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10919\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Franco_Basaglia1979.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"273\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10919\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Franco Basaglia<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>&#8220;When we say no to the asylum, we say no to the misery of the world, and we unite with all the people that struggle for\u00a0emancipation&#8221;<\/em> (Basaglia, 2000, p.28).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In 2018, the Basaglia Law (1978), which decreed the closure of psychiatric hospitals in Italy, completed 40 years.\u00a0The psychiatrist Franco Basaglia dedicated his life to the struggle against the violence of total institutions and, in particular, mental asylums.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Venice in 1924, he studied medicine in the mid- 1940s, when he\u00a0got involved with a group of anti-fascists students\u00a0and joined The Resistance, a military and political movement, being held captive for six months in a local prison.<\/p>\n<p>In the early 1960s, Basaglia understood that psychiatry in Italy was outdated, where\u00a0almost hundred thousand were confined in mental asylums.
