Critical analysis of a document or set of documents is a prerequisite for good historical research. The sources not only provide evidence for interpretation by historians, acting as a condition for validation, but also describe pathways, indicate agency, and allow comparisons. At a time when open science is being discussed, the study and dissemination of sources is gaining new momentum for providing greater visibility and transparency to research and enhancing dialog between peers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0relevance of sources is the main theme of the guest editors\u2019 note in the latest issue of the Hist\u00f3ria, Ci\u00eancias, Sa\u00fade \u2013 Manguinhos (HCSM) vol.26 no.4 Oct.\/Dec. 2019<\/a> entitled \u201cIn defense of sources in uncertain times\u201d<\/a>, written by the new associate editors Luciana Heymann, researcher at Casa de Oswaldo Cruz\/Fiocruz, and Rog\u00e9rio Rosa Rodrigues, professor at the Santa Catarina State University.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Heymann and Rodrigues, today, returning to the sources takes on new meaning:<\/p>\n

Amid the spread of openly distorted discourse on the past, including conservative negation and revisionism which propagate online, the historical sources emerge as a guarantee, along with the procedures that ensure their veracity.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Ahead of the \u201cSources\u201d section, the new associate editors invite and encourage their colleagues to submit their contributions. They affirm their motivation to continue the work they have carried out so far, always open to new views on the potential of documents, periodicals, objects, and collections, as well as databases and webpages.<\/p>\n

The journal accepts contributions on a rolling basis; authors should have a master\u2019s degree at minimum, and manuscripts submitted to this section should not exceed five thousand words. These texts will be submitted to external reviewers, with the same prerequisites that apply to articles published in the \u201cAnalysis\u201d section.<\/p>\n
