{"id":10788,"date":"2019-11-11T12:07:11","date_gmt":"2019-11-11T14:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/?p=10788"},"modified":"2019-11-11T12:09:46","modified_gmt":"2019-11-11T14:09:46","slug":"lets-talk-about-syphilis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/lets-talk-about-syphilis\/","title":{"rendered":"Lets talk about syphilis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\">November 2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Recent data of the Brazilian Ministry of Health shows\u00a0a significant increase\u00a0in cases of syphilis in 2018.\u00a0According to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aids.gov.br\/pt-br\/pub\/2019\/boletim-epidemiologico-sifilis-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Epidemiological Bulletin\u00a0on syphilis 2019<\/a>, there was an increase\u00a0from\u00a059.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 2017, to 75.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the next year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10790\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scielo.br\/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S0104-59702010000400002&amp;lng=es&amp;nrm=iso&amp;tlng=en\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10790\" class=\"wp-image-10790 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/historia-sifilis-catedra-el-diario-de-salud.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"409\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10790\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The name &#8220;syphilis&#8221; was coined by\u00a0<em>the Italian physician and poet<\/em>\u00a0Girolamo Fracastoro in his epic poem.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">HCSM have already\u00a0published several articles about this curable and neglected disease.\u00a0Today, we\u00a0highlight three of them:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/syphilis-in-ancient-peru\/\">Syphilis in ancient Peru<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; This paper examines the dissertation \u2018La antig\u00fcedad de la s\u00edfilis en el ant\u00edguo Peru\u2019, written by Julio Tello in 1909 and argues that it can be read as a thesis on medical anthropology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"meta-info\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/womens-reproductive-health-in-early-twentieth-century-rio-de-janeiro\/\">Women\u2019s reproductive health in early twentieth-century Rio de Janeiro<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Cassia Roth, Professor\u00a0from the Department of History at the University of Georgia, shows that elevated stillbirth and maternal mortality rates marked women\u2019s reproductive years, despite official efforts to increase access to clinical healthcare.\u00a0Syphilis and obstetric complications during childbirth were the main causes of stillbirths, while puerperal fever led maternal death rates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/girolamo-fracastoro-y-la-invencion-de-la-sifilis\/\">Girolamo Fracastoro and the invention of syphilis\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0The name &#8220;syphilis&#8221; was coined by\u00a0<em>the Italian physician and poet<\/em>\u00a0Girolamo Fracastoro in his epic poem, written in Latin, entitled Syphilis sive morbus gallicus.\u00a0Virginia Iommi Echeverr\u00eda,\u00a0lecturer at the Instituto de Historia de la Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Valpara\u00edso analyzes the work of\u00a0Fracastoro and\u00a0his different\u00a0ideas\u00a0about the disease.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HCSM have already published several articles about this curable and neglected disease.
