{"id":10635,"date":"2019-10-01T16:13:32","date_gmt":"2019-10-01T19:13:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/?p=10635"},"modified":"2019-10-25T11:53:49","modified_gmt":"2019-10-25T14:53:49","slug":"the-history-of-a-mosquito","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/revistahcsm.coc.fiocruz.br\/english\/the-history-of-a-mosquito\/","title":{"rendered":"The history of a mosquito"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\">October 2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The arrival of the first African mosquito\u00a0<em>Anopheles gambiae<\/em>\u00a0in the Americas was recorded in March of 1930.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">According to the article\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scielo.br\/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S0104-59702019000300823&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso&amp;tlng=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anopheles gambiae in Brazil<\/a>, published in the current issue of HCSM (July\/Sept.\u00a02019), the mosquito\u00a0was found by Rockefeller Foundation\u00a0 entomologist Raymond C. Shannon,\u00a0who worked for the Cooperative Yellow Fever Service (SCFA) in Natal, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10638\" style=\"width: 468px\" Brazil: the background to a \u201csilent spread,\u201d 1930-1932<\/a>, by Gabriel Lopes\u00a0Post-doctoral research intern at PPGHCS, Casa de Oswaldo Cruz, Fiocruz\u00a0analyzes the arrival and identification of this African mosquito\u00a0and the initial reactions of scientists and public health authorities against the epidemics of malaria caused by this species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Lopes argues that the mosquito&#8217;s presence was neglected after some initial emergency actions, resulting in a major\u00a0malaria epidemic in 1938.<\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">About
