According to recent information of the World Health Organization, around 80% of the world’s 1.1 billion smokers live in low- and middle-income countries.<\/p>\n

HCS-Manguinhos has already published some articles\u00a0on\u00a0smoking trends.\u00a0 In 2018, we interviewed<\/a>\u00a0Allan M. Brandt,\u00a0 Professor of the History of Medicine at Harvard University. According to him, \u201cas smokers in higher income countries have quit, the companies have worked hard to find \u2018replacement smokers\u2019 in lower and middle-income countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to Brandt\u2019s interview, Fiocruz researchers Luiz Antonio Teixeira and Luiz Alves<\/a> argued that tobacco consumption in Brazil goes in the opposite direction to global trends due to its successful policies against\u00a0tobacco\u00a0consumption\u00a0policies.\u00a0In the beginning of the 1990\u2019s, smoking rates in Brazil\u00a0were about 34.8%, today\u00a0it\u00a0has dropped to approximately 15%.<\/p>\n
