The importance of the historical perspective for social thinking in health: the contributions of Madel Luz and Emerson Merhy, published in our current issue (vol.25 no.2 abr./jun. 2018)  examines the work of two prominent Brazilian authors of the field of collective health.

Madel Therezinha Luz is a philosopher and sociologist with large experience on health sociology. Emerson Merhy  is a reference in the field of public health and has contributed to the construction of the Brazilian Unified Health System – SUS.

Researchers at Universidade de São Paulo (USP) Maria Cristina da Costa Marques, Áurea Maria Zöllner Ianni, Áquila Mendes and Rafael Mantovani reviews the work of Luz and Merhy in order to understand the role of historical perspectives in public health.
