The history of relationships between animals

Feb 2022

The history of animals is the subject of our new supplement. Interactions between species have a long history and have mobilized human societies over time through the challenges and potential of these encounters. The dossier Unbalanced reciprocities: the history of relationships between animals is an initiative of guest editors Regina Horta Duarte (Federal University of Minas Gerais), Gabriel Lopes (House of Oswaldo Cruz/Fiocruz), Natascha Stefania Carvalho De Ostos (Instituto René Rachou/Fiocruz Minas) and Nelson Aprobato Filho (University of São Paulo).

This special issue abounds with birds, hippos, seals jaguars, pumas, llamas, and rabbits. Extinct animals, vegetarian humans, conquistadors, and so many others show that history-writing must include animal diversity beyond humans.

This dossier brings together the diversity of themes, authors, institutions and methodological approaches on the history of animals, especially in Latin America.

It covers topics including birdsongs, hunters and jaguars on the Brazil-Argentina border, Colombian zoos, the animal issue and the Anthropocene debates, llamas and Andean peoples in South America, animals in the historiography of Latin America, and much more.
