António Nunes Ribeiro Sanches was a Portuguese physician and the author of several works about education and science in Portugal and its colonies.
This article (Hist. cienc. saude-Manguinhos vol.24 no.2 Apr./Jun. 2017), written by Gisele C. Conceição (Universidade do Porto, Portugal), sheds light on an unpublished manuscript written by Sanches in 1763, in which he argued for the recognition of Brazilian natural resources and their exploitation for trade and medicine.
The manuscript points to the advantages of knowledge about colonies’ natural history for the economy, agriculture and science.
Ribeiro Sanches showed how countries such as England, the Netherlands and Spain were able to enrich their trade and knowledge through the study of the natural history of their colonial possessions.
He also wrote about the teaching of medicine, and the importance of natural history for medical practice.
