1st International Workshop
Challenges facing interdisciplinary journals:
experiences from the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Latin America
in history, the social sciences, and the humanities
Fiocruz, Rio de Janeiro, 22-24 June 2016
In recent years, the editors and editorial staffs of interdisciplinary journals have faced a combination of old and new challenges when it comes to asserting their value, enhancing their management practices, and improving the quality and visibility of their publications.
These challenges have been especially difficult for the scholarly journals focused on Latin America that are published in this region and abroad, whose editors need to work with authors from the social and human sciences who want their research to reach audiences from different fields. Unfortunately, these editors have never had a space where they could engage in an organized discussion of their common challenges. This workshop will provide that space, allowing editors from Brazil, other Latin American countries, and the United Kingdom to share their rich experiences. This dialogue about the current situation and the strategies adopted by journals will help those concerned to devise more coherent, innovative, and sustainable editorial policies.
The workshop is part of a one-year joint project, undertaken with the support of the British Academy, by the Brazilian journal História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos, published by the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz/Fiocruz, and the Journal of Latin American Studies, published by Cambridge University Press. The project has developed this workshop as an opportunity for editors from various corners of Brazil, the rest of Latin America, and the United Kingdom to contribute their thoughts on current and future agendas regarding the editing, indexing, and impact of interdisciplinary journals in the fields of the human and social sciences, especially history. This association of the human and social sciences reflects the fact that in much of Latin America, history is considered a part of one of these two areas.
