Past responses to mental health

October 2020

Over the past 200 years in the United States, a tension has existed between care and custody as responses to mental health.

The Digital exhibition Care and Custody, of the National Library of Medicine presents documents, pictures and letters of people at these sites exposing the horrific conditions of mental hospitals for patients.

This exhibitions explores different approaches to mental health treatment, as well as different responses and ways in which people have struggled to create a more inclusive society.  See the exhibition!
