History, historians and the covid-19 pandemic

Feb 2022

The article History, historians and the COVID-19 pandemic, published in the dossier Pandemics and epidemics in historical perspective, of the journal Topoi, discusses, through a provocation to nine historians from different institutions and countries,  the impact of the pandemic on their profession and on the field of history.

The nine historians are: Mariola Espinosa (University of Iowa, US), Reinaldo Funes Monzote (Universidad de la Havana, Cuba), Mónica García (Universidad del Rosario, Colombia), Ana Carolina Vimieiro Gomes (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil), Vivek Neelakantan (Independent Historian Southeast Asian Medical History, Índia), Oluwatoyin Oduntan (Towson University, US), Okezi T. Otovo (Florida International University, US) Patricia Palma (Universidad de Tarapacá, Chile) and Rodrigo Turin (Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil).

Their reflections were developed from three questions: (1) In what ways has living under the current pandemic affected your historical writing or thinking?  (2) (How) should historians engage in public affairs relating to the current pandemic context?; and  (3) What historical themes, perspectives, and topics are missing from the historiography published/produced during these pandemic years?

Topoi is a publication of the Postgraduate Program in Social History at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. This article is part of the dossier Pandemics and epidemics in historical perspective,  coordinated by Gilberto Hochman (Casa de Oswaldo Cruz) and Anne-Emanuelle Birn (University of Toronto).
