Health is not a commodity

November 2018

Fabiana Pinto Fernandes, graduate student in Collective Health at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro was selected to attend the global conference on primary health care in Astana with the youth delegation.

On 25-26 October 2018, the world came together in Astana, Kazakhstan, in the 40th anniversary of the Declaration of Alma-Ata, to renew its commitment to primary health care and universal health coverage in a conference co-hosted by Government of Kazakhstan, the World Health Organization and UNICEF.

The Alma-Ata Declaration of 1978 emerged as a major milestone of the twentieth century in the field of public health, identifying primary health care as the key to achieve universal health coverage.

As a result of  the 2018 meeting, a Working Group composed of  researchers from Oswaldo Cruz Foundation* and National Health Council (CNS)** produced a document with some propositions to achieve a better quality primary care.

This document also presents some reflections on three decades of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and the current threats of fiscal adjustment programs.
