Effects of changes in psychiatric classifications

February 2017

The paper Psychosis and schizophrenia: effects of changes in psychiatric classifications on clinical and theoretical approaches to mental illness, by Fernando Tenório, professor at the Psychology Department of PUC- Rio, discusses especially the weakening of the “psychosis” category.

Since the third revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) published in 1980 by the American Psychiatric Association, the main categories of mental illness classification – psychosis, neurosis and perversion – were replaced by a more empirical diagnosis based on observable symptoms.

As the current pathological classifications prioritize a physicalist approach, conditions previously associated with subjectivity are being medicalized.

In this video (in Portuguese), Tenório explains the impacts of this changes in the treatment of mental disorders.
