The tropics, science, and leishmaniasis

March, 2018

Representations of skin lesions and facial deformities caused by leishmaniasis have been found on South American pottery.

The tropics, science, and leishmaniasis: an analysis of the circulation of knowledge and asymmetries, published the dossier Public Health Policy in Latin America and the Caribbean (HCSM vol 24 no 4 Oct-Dec 2017), investigates the process of circulation of knowledge during the first decades of the twentieth century.

According to the paper, written by Denis Guedes Jr., (doctoral candidate of Programa de Pós-graduação em História das Ciências e da Saúde/Casa de Oswaldo Cruz/Fiocruz), the study of the leishmaniasis played a significant role in consolidating research institutes of tropical medicine in South America, and  brought international recognition to researchers.

However, the paper argues that the process of constructing knowledge is an emblematic case for us to consider the manner in which the circulations of knowledge, specimens, and skills occurred with regard to the asymmetries and divisions that exist amid the production of new scientific knowledge.
