Marcos Cueto, Science Editor of the journal História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos, is the new ‘President-Elect’ of the Division of History of Science and Technology (DHST) of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IUHPST), the scientific society that organized the 25th International Congress of History of Science and Technology in Rio de Janeiro from July 23 to 29.
Cueto was nominated President-elect, on the last day of the congress by a majority vote of the General Assembly, consisting of representatives of all national scientific societies, commissions and sections of DHST, which is based in Paris. In a long-term position, Cueto has the task of supporting the division’s council and its current Presidente in office, the US historian of Oregon State University, Michael Osborne. At the next International Congress of History of Science and Technology, which will take place in Prague, Czech Republic, in 2021, Cueto will automatically become the President in office for the next four years.
At the last General Assembly, Angela Creager (Princeton University) and the Brazilian historian Luiz Carlos Soares (UFF / UFRJ) were elected Vice-Presidents of the DHST. In addition, the French historian Catherine Jami was re-elected to the position of General-Secretary. In his lecture at the opening ceremony, Cueto examined the history of Latin American science, a text he intends to present in an article. Cueto also analyzed the intellectual concerns of Latin American historians, such as the concepts of reception; center and periphery; advantages and problems of ‘global history’; and the recent debate on the transnational circulation of knowledge.
It should be noted that Cueto is the first researcher of the Southern Hemisphere to become the President of the Division, which can envision a greater interaction and dialogue between researchers from developing countries and those from middle-income and industrialized countries.
