Donald A. Henderson, a U.S. physician and epidemiologist, headed the World Health Organization’s Smallpox Eradication Program from 1966 to 1977. The program famously succeeded, and the global eradication of smallpox was announced on May 8, 1980.
In this interview, Henderson talks about the endemic nature of smallpox in Brazil, the relations between WHO, the Pan American Health Organization, and the Brazilian government, international cooperation in eradicating smallpox and the various strategies applied.
The interview with Donald A. Henderson was conducted by Gilberto Hochman (Casa de Oswaldo Cruz) and Steven Palmer (University of Windsor), in Baltimore, United States, on November 11, 2008 and was published in Manguinhos in 2010, in the Dossier Smallpox.
