We welcome the appointment of Nísia Trindade Lima as the new president of Fiocruz by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. She was elected on November 25th by Fiocruz employees (with 59.7% of votes) to lead the institution.
In an interview with O Globo newspaper, Nísia Trindade reaffirmed Fiocruz’s commitment to public health in Brazil and the institution’s role in addressing the health crisis, mainly represented by the threat of zika, dengue and chikungunya epidemics.
Revista Historia Ciência Saúde-Manguinhos is very proud to have Nísia Trindade Lima among the members of its editorial board.
We congratulate Nísia Trindade Lima, the first woman president of Fiocruz, and wish her success in conducting the institution in these particularly difficult times.
Nísia is a sociologist and joined Fiocruz as a researcher almost thirty years ago. Her projects and publications deal mainly with discussions related to the role of sciences and intellectuals in the construction of national identity, especially with regard to territorial conformation, organization of health and education services, and relations between regional and national arrangements in twentieth-century Brazil .
