The Associate Director (AD) for the Center of Latin American Studies(CLAS), University of Pittsburgh, will have primary responsibility for overseeing budgets, writing grant proposals, tracking and reporting data related to grants, program development, managing publications and publicity, and running grant competitions for faculty and students. In consultation with the Director and other staff members, the AD develops programming to meet grant and fellowship Center priorities. Current grant and fellowship programs include the Title VI/National Resource Center (NRC), Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships, and Tinker Field Research Grants; other programs of opportunity may arise.
S/he will also coordinate and collaborate with the staff members who have responsibilities for our certificate programs, outreach, administration, and various center activities. The AD will work closely with departments and schools regarding curriculum, special courses, visiting scholars, speakers, and conferences.
In collaboration with the Director, s/he monitors and makes decisions related to the centers’ multiple budgets and attends annual local and national meetings as the representative of the Center. The AD must be able to work with minimal supervision, represent the center in a professional manner for administrative and academic settings, work efficiently on multiple projects, and maintain good rapport with university administrators, staff, faculty, students, and representatives of other domestic and international partner institutions. Occasional travel and weeknight/weekend hours required. Minimum 5 years of experience in a University setting with supervisory responsibilities. A Master’s degree in an area related to Latin American studies is required, PhD preferred. Comfort working with budgets essential. Knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese required. The Associate Director reports to the Director of the CLAS.

Preferred Qualifications:
PhD preferred. Knowledge of Latin America and ability to speak Spanish and/or Portuguese is highly preferred. Superb writing skills are vital, as well as attention to detail, multitasking capabilities, and the ability to work in an extremely fast-paced work environment. Computer literacy is required. Database and web experience a plus. Other requirements include ability to track data for grant proposals, oversee proposed activities and implementation, and use success of former proposals and reports to write the next cycle of reports and proposals, as well as the ability to interact well with people at all levels.
