Social Medicine is a bilingual open access journal published by the Montefiore Medical Center, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Latin American Social Medicine Association.

It’s latest issue (Vol 8, no 3 2014) features six articles, both in Spanish and English. In the editorial section, Frank Thomas Houghton and Sharon B Houghton discuss the overemphasis on quantitative methodology in research and an ignoring of qualitative methods.

The original research section features two articles. Caitlin Schrepel, Eric Tanenbaum, Gerald Paccione and Roberto Belmar analyze the successes and failures of the Chilean healthcare system under the AUGE (Acceso Universal de Universal Access with Explicit Guarantees) plan in a rural area.  In the same section,  Socrates Litsios  revisits the Bandoeng Conference on Rural Hygiene, organized by the League of Nations Health Organization (LNHO) in 1937.

This issue also brings one article about the the creation and implementation of a global health service-learning elective supported by Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital; a debate about the social determinants of health; and an article about the “hidden curriculum”of global health.
