Oceans, science, and universities: scientific study of the sea during the First Portuguese Republic, by Ângela Salgueiro, a researcher at Instituto de História Contemporânea, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, explores the institutionalization process of marine biology in Portugal from the 1890s.
The article (HCSM, vol 28, n2, 2021) addresses different forms of institutionalization of marine biology in the country, such as the creation of marine experimental stations. According to the article, the State was a fundamental agent in the process, fostering research in universities and creating scientific research institutes and public aquariums.
To address the issue of the institutionalization of marine biology in Portugal, the article presents the case of the Foz Maritime Zoology Station. Located near the sea to facilitate the collection of maritime specimens, this was the first Portuguese marine station to be attached to a higher education institution, the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto.
