The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation was created on May 25, 1900. It was first called Serum Therapeutic Institute and was founded to produce serums and vaccines. After Oswaldo Cruz was designated director in 1902, the institution expanded its activities and became involved in research and experimental medicine.
To celebrate the 124 years of Fiocruz, we selected a broad range of articles – published in English and Spanish – discussing different aspects, areas, and activities held by the institution. Topics include the following: The establishment of the Federal Serum Therapy Institute; The legacy of Oswaldo Cruz – the renowned Brazilian scientist and founder of the institutional complex that today bears his name; The work of Carlos Chagas, a young researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, who discovered the Chagas disease; The creation of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS); The work done by Fiocruz, in health education and training; Fiocruz’s international role in health diplomacy and cooperation; The centenary of the Fernandes Figueira Institute, the Fiocruz unit devoted to children’s and mother health.

Chagas disease: science, health, and society The year of 2019 marks 110 years of one of the outstanding achievements in Brazilian science: the discovery, by Carlos Chagas, a young researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, of the disease that bears his name.
