Ricardo Ventura Santos, senior researcher from the National School of Public Health Sergio Arouca at Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Ensp/Fiocruz, in their Portuguese acronyms), was elected senior member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC, in its Portuguese acronym). He is the first researcher from Fiocruz to be elected to the Social Sciences field of the ABC. Its members contribute with studies, which are central to society, that will supply the development of public policies with scientific data. The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for May 2020 during the Magna gathering of the ABC.
“I received the news on the election with honor and surprise. Even more so given the moment in history we are living in this country. It is a position that comes with great responsibility. My research career cannot be disassociated from Fiocruz. The Ensp has been my haven for almost three decades”, says Ricardo.
For Nísia Trindade Lima, president of Fiocruz, the appointment is a recognition of the researcher’s academic career, which has always been focused on relevant areas of the national public health system (SUS, in its Portuguese acronym). “Its is a great honour for Fiocruz to have Ricardo Ventura as elected senior member of the ABC. Congratulations to Ricardo and the Ensp for this recognition”.
Hermano Castro, director of the Ensp, also manifested the institution’s satisfaction with the election. “It is a pride and a recognition of his work , which has contributed a great deal to Brazilian sciences. Ricardo is recognized at the national and international levels for his publications and career path in defense of public health for the indigenous population.”
