The symposium was proposed by Marcos Cueto (HCSM) and Sanjoy Bhattacharya, editor of Medical History

In this symposium, 15 editors of history of medicine and science journals will discuss the best means of enhancing scholarly perspectives about the publication of articles and book reviews in academic journals in a globalized, internet-driven age.

This symposium will be relevant to the main theme of the Congress “Science, Technology and Medicine between the Global and the Local”.

Speakers will describe their experiences, problematize some of the challenges currently facing the sector, pose some general questions about how to improve collaborations, internationalization and access, and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of multi-lingualism and Open Access.

The simposium will help to better understand authors’, reviewers’ and editors’ concerns and requirements, publishers’ and funders’ goals, impact factor measurements, indexing and database requirements, the imposition of multiple ranking exercises, and the challenges of digital initiatives and social media activities (Facebook, Twitter, institutional blogs etc.).
